A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM: A MINI MID-YEAR MARDI GRAS

Every year for 30 years the Krewe of O.A.K. has put on a bash for those too eager to wait for Mardi Gras season. The festivities begin promptly at 7:30 P.M. where the Krewe lines up off the corner of Oak Street and Carrolton Avenue. As they turn the corner of Oak, the theme becomes clear. In 2015, the theme was “Tie Dye Me Up” which is a fitting name for the Krewe of O.A.K., which stands for “Outrageous And Kinky.” This year’s theme, a celebration of its 30th birthday, is “Get Wet”. If you went this year, you probably did get wet; with a hillbilly hot tub (a truck with a tarp swimming pool in its bed, for those of us who aren’t up to snuff) and plenty of water guns to boot, the majority was soaked. This year’s music was provided by the well-known Disco Amigo dance troupe, which added to the great vibes.

While the parade starts fairly early in the evening, the fun doesn’t stop until late at night. There are many food vendors, restaurants, and awesome bars to visit while you’re getting wet and wild. If you missed it this year, don’t worry; the notorious party will be back next year. With a new outrageous theme and plenty of spirits to go around, the good times won’t stop rolling, even when the parade will.
