Three Glorious Days of Sy Smith

Sy Smith's single Now and Later off her latest album Sometimes A Rose Will Grow in Concrete

Smooth and soulful, sweet and strong – these are just a few adjectives to describe the sound of Sy Smith.

After six years, Smith has released her album Sometimes a Rose Will Grow in Concrete, and she will be touring with world renowned Grammy-winning trumpeter Chris Botti. Born in New York City, raised in Washington D.C., and based in Los Angeles, multiregional Smith will be touring internationally. Her tour began in February in Hong Kong and Singapore, continued to the West Coast, and will be rolling through Houston within the week.

Smith has often been called “the hardest working woman in underground soul,” and Smith has proven this moniker true. Before becoming a solo act, Smith led D.C. based band “In Tyme,” a six person gogo band. She has also provided backup vocals for big names such as Whitney Houston and Usher and has also written songs for Carlos Santana.

One can hear a variety of musical influences in Smith’s work – elements of 70s funk in “Bad on You,” old school jazz in “Now and Later,” and smooth R&B in “Camelot.” Some may call her sound retro, but Smith demonstrates that the sounds of yesterday can prove so refreshing in today’s modern music scene.

For all of our Houston readers, Sy Smith will be performing on March 24 and 25 at Jones Hall and on March 26 the Greenroom at Warehouse Live. The Warehouse Live show begins at 7:30 pm with doors opening at 6 pm.

Smith will continue to tour throughout the country, visiting venues in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and ending in New York City on April 7.
