Are You Ready For a Bangin' Night?
With songs that combine the sheer power of spoken word, elements from a wide variety of musical styles including funk and R&B, and vocals so adaptable and lively you wouldn’t believe there aren’t more members, Tank and the Bangas is an auditory rollercoaster in the best of ways.
Tank and the Bangas formed in 2011 after the members met at an open mic show in in New Orleans. While nods at their New Orleans background are apparent in their sound, the group boasts an incredible diversity of influences that makes it impossible to put them into a box and describe them as simply a New Orleans band.
“Quick,” the song for which Tank and the Bangas won NPR’S Tiny Desk Contest, features lead vocals that are powerful and self-assured and background vocals that interact in a style reminiscent of gospel choirs. In “Rollercoasters” and “Human,” Tank and the Bangas show they can be just as soft and intimate as they can be confident and vivacious. The band combines smooth spoken word with lyrics that describe experiences most audiences can relate to – the uncontrollable, thrilling sensation of falling in love and the essence of what it means to be alive and human.
If you’re in Houston and want to check out Tank and the Bangas for yourself, the group will be performing on April 5 in the Downstairs Room at White Oak Music Hall. Shreveport born singer-songwriter Maggie Koerner will be opening. The show begins at 8 p.m. and doors open at 7 p.m.
