Your Weekend Getaway: Three Reasons to Hit Baton Rouge Blues Fest This Weekend

Sometimes, it's good to get away. For our staff, it's good to get to the state where this publication all started: Louisiana. For those of you not familiar with the goodness of Baton Rouge Blues fest, here are three reasons to take a quick drive and check out this FREE festival this weekend!

1. Legendary Performers and History

The secret that no one tells you about Baton Rouge Louisiana is how it birthed some of the best blues in the country. The weekend is hosted by the Baton Rouge Blues Foundation, which promotes the preservation and advancement of regional "Swamp Blues" (and throws a kicking annual blues gala). The festival highlights a treasure trove of classic performers. Our personal favorite legend of the weekend? One Lazy Lester. His light lyrics and heavy instrumentals rooted in regional blues styling create an act worth watching every time. Be sure to check out legend Henry Gray while you're at it too!

2. A Bit of New School

In addition to the foundation hosting local legends, Baton Rouge Blues fest attracts new talent to showcase as well. Last year we had the pleasure of seeing Jonatan Boogie long (pictured above) put on an energetic set. This year we look forward to up and coming artist Samantha Fish. Other new school sounds sure to hold attention include Erica Falls, a talented R&B singer that fuses funk with soul, and New Orleans masters of music Water Seeds. Whether it be new or old, the festival has a bit of everything.

3, Louisiana Love

We want you to see more than BR when you hit the road! If you are feeling ambitious, New Orleans is hosting it's annual French Quarter Fest. If you want an amazing meal, be sure to pop by Lafayette for some authentic cajun cuisine. If you just want to stay Baton Rouge, be sure to learn about history and listen to some music while you're visiting the state capitol! If you need any suggestions about where to eat, be sure to text out editor (that's me, Nicole) for some pro tips. We urge you to spend your days at Blues Fest and your early mornings exploring all the goodness the area has to offer!

Oh and did we mention the festival is FREE? Why am I still typing, see you there! I'll be the one stuffing my face with etoufee dancing to some good grooves.
