Weekly Houston Show Listing 1.27.23

Updated: Feb 17

Happy Friday!! As usual there is a treasure trove of music that awaits you this weekend, so let’s dig into it.

FRIDAY (yes tonight)

Inner looper metal heads rejoice! There’s a sick show at Black Magic Social Club tonight. Bobby Liebling (of Pentagram) will be performing with an ensemble of local metal talent! Also on the lineup tonight is Stone Nomads, Fostermother, and Mr. Plow. Be sure to get there by 8. Cash at the door.

If you’re looking for something on the rock side of the spectrum but a little more mellow, head on over to Shoeshine Charley's Big Top Lounge for a show featuring Empty Shells, Psycho Jenni, Geranium Drive, and Shallowater. Cover is $10.

For the most mellow Friday of all, head over to Bohemeo's. Local dreamy pop stars Astralace will be performing as well as local talent Jacob Hutto, among others. Doors at 7, $5 cash

Craving a night of Spanglish rock? Check out Wonky Power tonight. For $12 you get a bargain show featuring local staples The Wheel Workers, Sera Cero, East of Eado, and Satri. Music starts at 8!

If you are looking for the best free set of the night, look no further than one of my favorite spots in town to jam to jazz at, Avant Garden. Free Radicals are putting on a free set tonight at 9.

Sometimes you have to hype the homies, and I’d be remiss not to mention Cave Troll playing music tonight at Wakefield Crowbar. Sets on at 7.

SATURDAY (that’s tomorrow)

Check out the rock show I’ve been looking forward to the most in a while. Mother Ghost is performing at Eighteen Ten Ojeman with Xanthan, Mind Mine, and Committeemen. Doors are at 8:30, tickets $10. See you there?

You’ll find me after that set at another haunt of mine, The End. They have a Son Bayou show for the Cumbia lovers out there. Last live Cumbia show at this venue was packed and popping, so if you’re looking for a show to dance at until wee hours, doors are at 8 and tickets are $15. Save me a dance.

If you like your music to support a great cause or some female-led goodness, be sure to check out Say Girl Say perform. You have TWO opportunities to see this ambient duo (that reminds me of a personal favorite, Meg Myers) perform. They will have a midday set at Cactus Music at noon then will be headlining a fundraising show at The Heights Theater at 8. Don’t miss out on these two this Saturday.

So if you love being outside in this weather like I do and love music you can dance to, you're in luck. Hard Luck Revival is sharing its musical talent with Shady Acres Saloon this Saturday at 8. Have a drink, kick back, and enjoy your Saturday in style.

Speaking of style, if you are looking for some talent of the guitar varietal, be sure to pop by Emmit's Place to catch John Calderon at 9. Be sure to tip your bartender, the staff there is the kindest.

Feeling nostalgic this Saturday? Check out an epic reunion of local legends The Missles-they will be lighting up The Continental Club, Houston, TX at 9PM.

SUNDAY (you're still here?)

If you are feeling like a jam, you're in luck because there are two solid ones this Sunday. Check out The Gumbo Jam this Sunday at 306 Main St unit 200 for a good time.

For a full day of sonic goodness and a jam, check out Emmit's Place for a doubleheader of Odell Gray's 75th birthday party followed by the Zydeco Jam after.

Get to a show, shake off your dancing shoes, and do all the things this weekend but be sure to catch some live music. As always, if you'd like to add a show, please do so in the comments section!
