Weekly Houston Show Listing 1.6.23
Happy FRIDAY! You made it through the post-holiday week, you might have dragged your feet, but you are here and ready for a lil rock n roll. And some other good stuff too. Let's dive into a mini post of my top six picks of shows this upcoming weekend.
FRIDAY (TONIGHT!)
Try and keep me away from cumbia in Houston, go ahead. TRY. Tonight at The End cumbia has a regional flair. Come try out Cucucuy's flavor of cumbia that will surely have your hips shaking and wanting more. Gio Chamba and Gracie Chavez are also part of this stacked lineup. Door at 8, $15, and all ages. Save me a dance?
Keep it chill tonight at Shoeshine Charley's Big Top Lounge with a lovely lineup of locals. Check out The Mustn’ts, Fern & Rocket, and Nathan Ray tonight with music on at 9 and a meager $10 for what's sure to be an excellent sonic experience.
It's a great weekend for some citrus. Check out the Fresh Oranges set tonight featuring Diving, Sya, Teauxb, and Dinero Harper at that best neighborhood bar in town, Eighteen Ten Ojeman. Get your vibe on at 9PM.
SATURDAY (TOMORROW)
You know what day it is: tis the day of the birth of two legends and the day of one of Houston's more amusing music festivals in existence, BowiElvis Fest hosted by Splice Records TX. This day is dedicated to both artists' music and while I typically avoid promoting not original music like the plague, this lineup is stacked with local talent paying homage to some of the best creative minds in pop this century. Check out The Continental Club, Houston, TX and come in your best get-up, there's a costume contest. Doors at 6:30.
Did you know there is another rad festival this Saturday as well? Check out Pretty in Punk, an all-female-fronted music lineup put together by Live and Loud Productions. Go support your local female musicians like Tricie and the Phantom Punks, Psycho Jenni, and Demonichen this weekend at Black Magic Social Club for $12 with doors at 7:30.
Maybe you are feeling something smoother? If that's the case, be sure to head over to Leon's Lounge to check out Lush Life performing a jazz set this Saturday. Most sets at Leon's start around 9 and cost $10, but if I am wrong, feel free to correct me on this one.
Enjoy what Houston's got to offer, and I'll be back next week with a full listing of more sets! As always, feel free to contribute shows in the comments, and get out there to support your local music scene.
